This exercise tests and develops scapular stability under load. Lying on your back on the floor or a weights bench, a light dumbbell is raised slowly towards the ceiling. At the top of the range, the shoulder blade is allowed to lift, and a gentle rotation of the hand – as if screwing and unscrewing a light bulb – is added before lowering the weight back down.
Starting with a low weight of one to two kilograms, this exercise builds the shoulder’s capacity to maintain control while managing external load.
This exercise has been recommended by the clinical team at London Bridge Sports Medicine as part of a structured rehabilitation plan. Always perform it as directed by your clinician.
