The hanging scapular press is a simple but effective exercise for developing control and stability of the shoulder blade. Using an overhead bar, the movement involves setting the shoulder blades gently back and down, holding briefly, then releasing and repeating.
It can be performed standing or in a slight lunge depending on the height of the bar, making it accessible for most people. Despite its simplicity, it targets the stabilising muscles of the scapula that are important for healthy shoulder movement.
This exercise has been recommended by the clinical team at London Bridge Sports Medicine as part of a structured rehabilitation plan. Always perform it as directed by your clinician.
