Head injury and Concussion
A head injury should never be ignored.
Early assessment and the right management are essential for a safe recovery.
At London Bridge Sports Medicine (LBSM), our Sports & Exercise Medicine doctors are experienced in the assessment and management of head injuries, concussion and persistent post-concussion symptoms.
Whether your injury occurred during sport, at work, in a road traffic accident or from a fall, we provide expert assessment, ongoing monitoring and evidence-based guidance to help you recover safely.
Concussion can affect anyone, from elite athletes and school children to recreational sports participants and those injured in everyday life.
While most people recover well, recognising the signs early and managing the injury correctly is vital to reduce the risk of prolonged symptoms or further injury.
Please note: You should initially seek immediate medical assessment from your local A&E or urgent care centre if you have sustained a significant head injury, to rule out any more serious injuries, such as a skull fracture.
What Is Concussion?
Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull.
You do not have to lose consciousness to have sustained a concussion.
In fact, most people remain awake but experience a temporary disturbance in normal brain function.
Common symptoms include:
- Headache
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Nausea
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Feeling slowed down or “foggy”
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering
- Fatigue
- Mood changes or irritability
- Sleep disturbance
Symptoms may develop immediately or several hours after the injury, which is why ongoing monitoring is important.
Expert Concussion Assessment
During your consultation we will:
- Discuss how the injury occurred
- Review your symptoms and medical history
- Assess memory, concentration and cognitive function
- Perform a neurological examination
- Assess balance and coordination
- Identify any red flag symptoms requiring urgent investigation
- Advise whether further imaging or hospital assessment is needed
- Develop a personalised recovery plan
Where appropriate, we can arrange further investigations or referral to specialist services if more serious injury is suspected.
Safe Return to Sport, Work and Daily Life
One of the most important aspects of concussion management is knowing when it is safe to return to activity.
Returning too soon can prolong recovery and significantly increase the risk of further injury, particularly if another concussion occurs before the brain has fully recovered.
Our Sports Medicine doctors provide expert guidance on:
- Graduated return to sport programmes
- Returning to work or school
- Exercise during recovery
- Managing persistent symptoms
- Ongoing monitoring and follow-up
- When it is safe to resume full training and competition
We follow the latest international concussion guidelines to ensure every patient receives evidence-based care.
Persistent Concussion Symptoms
While most people recover within a few weeks, some continue to experience symptoms for longer.
We regularly assess and manage:
- Persistent headaches
- Ongoing dizziness
- Balance problems
- Difficulty concentrating
- Memory problems
- Fatigue
- Sleep disturbance
- Anxiety and reduced confidence returning to sport
Early assessment and appropriate management can help identify factors delaying recovery and support a safe return to normal activities.
